Lee Morgn's trumpet style is the epitome if hard bop playing - brash, fleet, and attention-grabbing. His recordings as they developed combined smart and complex tunes with the kind of groove-inspired numbers that sought to repeat the success of "The Sidewinder." He also composed some truly enduring tracks; included here is the gorgeous "Ceora" from the Cornbread album of 1965 and the splashy "Speedball" from The Gigolo of the same year. An interesting highlight of this collection is the inclusion of "The Rumproller," the title track of another 1965 session. It was a clear attempt to emulate the groove of "The Sidewinder" and yet it was written not by Morgan but by another relatively recent addition to the label, pianist Andrew Hill.
