This 1990 edition of Epic Associated's "Contemporary Jazz Masters" series on was produced by Creed Taylor and contains much of the stellar work Hubbard did with Taylor for CTI in the early '70s. Hubbard emerged from the '60s as a major force in jazz trumpet playing. With his work on CTI, including 1972's Grammy winning FIRST LIGHT, he became perhaps the biggest star of the moment. On THE BEST OF FREDDIE HUBBARD, we hear Hubbard fronting the smaller ensemble gathered for RED CLAY, which included Ron Carter on bass and Herbie Hancock on piano. We also hear him with the exotic, extended ensemble of strings and classical reeds from FIRST LIGHT. Through it all, Hubbard's stunning, clean sound and melodic improvisations shine. A memorable, previously unreleased version of Johnny Burke and James Van Heusen's classic "Here's that Rainy Day" makes for a nice bonus addition.

Every now and then there comes an artist who is able to do what he does best, well. That time has come. Freddie Hubbard examines several themes this time, each handled with the skill of the grandmaster. From the pace and rythymic backbone of 'Red Clay' to the gradual release of 'The Summer Knows' Hubbard blows with part poise and part passion each according to situation. This album illustrates Hubbard's improvisatory skill, from between the chords to public or studio showings. On this masterpiece Hubbard shows that as an artist his concentration and impulse easily are the best.

I Highly recommend this Disc to any young trumpet player looking to start a jazz collection. No one can match up to Freddie Hubbard, I got this CD 2 years ago and it rarely leaves my disc changer. This is a well rounded album displaying a full spectrum of Hubbard's raw talent and ground breaking sounds. Also to the Hip-hop enthusiast, listen to the first song(Red Clay), you will find that this melody is sampled on A Tribe Called Quest's 1993 "Midnight Mauraders."
